CHIN AUGMENTATION
What is chin augmentation?
Some patients with a retruded chin request for chin augmentation or enlargement.
This is done by inserting a solid silicone implant specifically carved for each
patient.
What can I expect before, during and after these procedures?
As with any surgery, a comprehensive pre-operative evaluation done by your
doctor is crucial to the success of your operation. Any previous surgeries will
be investigated. Any concomitant medical condition, allergies, bleeding problems
will be addressed and all medications being taken will be reviewed and recorded.
Your surgeon will assess your occlusion (the relationship of your upper set of
teeth to your lower set of teeth) and facial proportion, (specifically the
height of your nose) to see how the procedure will restore your facial balance
and symmetry.
These procedures are done under light sedation and local anesthesia. The local
anesthesia will be given using very fine needles. Incisions will be done beneath
the chin or from inside the mouth so that the scars are hardly visible at all.
The procedure usually takes 1-2 hours.
Most patients can go home on the day of surgery and resume household activities
within one or two days. Pain and discomfort following the surgery are typically
controlled with oral pain medication. Antibiotics may be prescribed. Stitches
placed are absorbable but any remaining sutures are removed in ten days time.
Within one to two weeks most patients can return to work. Most bruising and/or
swelling resolves within two weeks; more subtle swelling may persist longer,
depending on the patient.
