OTOPLASTY
What is otoplasty for?
Otoplasty is the correction of prominent ears often done during adolescence It
may also be done in adults. Typically, in a teen, with softer and more pliable
ear cartilage, all that is needed are specially placed sutures placed behind the
ear to “tuck it in”. In adults, resection or removal of a strip of cartilage
maybe necessary.
What can I expect before, during and after these procedures?
As with any surgery, a comprehensive pre-operative evaluation done by your
doctor is crucial to the success of your operation. Any previous surgeries will
be investigated. Any concomitant medical condition, allergies and bleeding
problems will be addressed and all medications being taken will be reviewed and
recorded.
This procedure is done under under local anesthesia and sedation in adults.
Incisions are placed behind the ear and are not visible. Typically the surgery
lasts up to 1-2 hours.
Special ear dressings will be placed post-operatively and patients will be
instructed not to sleep on their side. Pain medications and antibiotics will be
prescribed. Sutures are removed in one to two weeks. Patients are advised not to
engage in strenuous activities and contact sports for a month after the surgery.
