WOUND COVERAGE
SKIN GRAFTS
SKIN FLAPS

What are these procedures for?

The reconstructive part of plastic surgery aims to reconstruct areas of our body that have been deformed by trauma, burns, infection, previous surgeries or tumors.

A skin graft is used if only skin is missing. It involves harvesting skin from areas of the body not frequently visible (buttocks, thighs, back, inner upper arm, back of the ear and just beneath the neckline) This skin is then applied to the area in need and covered, immobilized for 3-5 days. The donor site is covered with a special dressing and like an abrasion, will heal in 7-10 days. Your doctor will instruct you how to take care of your newly grafted skin and donor site.

Flaps maybe composed of muscle, nerves, blood vessels and skin. These are needed for larger defects requiring a more complex reconstruction. Your doctor will discuss all options with you.
